The Student Alumni Board of the University of Utah Alumni Association, The MUSS Board, the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU), and volunteers worked with community members in November in a big effort to fight hunger in Utah. The Alumni Association’s food drive ran Nov. 12-25, with collection spots on campus, in local grocery stores, at the Utah Food Bank, and at Rice-Eccles Stadium when Utah played Colorado on Nov. 25 during the last Pac-12 football game of the season. The Utah Symphony | Utah Opera welcomes U alumni and students to attend "A U of U Red Carpet Affair" with the symphony on Dec. 3, featuring Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2. Come in your best formal red attire. Alumni can get a 20 percent discount on tickets.


WirelessThe Natural History Museum of Utah opened its doors to the public at the new Rio Tinto Center at the U on Nov. 18, with galleries that encourage exploration of Utah's ecosystems, first peoples, and past worlds.
  • Business showcase: The Spencer Fox Eccles Business Building opened Nov. 10, and students and professors will begin using it in January.
  • Epilepsy drugs: The U's Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology has received $24.5 million to identify new drugs for treating therapy-resistant epilepsy.
  • On Broadway: U alum Claybourne Elder BA'06 debuts in a new musical, Bonnie & Clyde, in New York.

Blue Man Group brings its latest exciting and outrageous show to Kingbury Hall on the U campus, with performances Dec. 6-11.
  • America's favorite orphan: See Annie at Pioneer Theatre Company, with performances Dec. 2-23.
  • Red Butte Garden: The garden's annual Holiday Open House, Dec. 3-4, features gifts for sale by local artists.
  • Salt 4: New York-based artist Xaviera Simmons' photographs and sculpture are on display at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts through Feb. 26.
  • USTAR at 5: The collaborative effort in technology and economic development is the topic of discussion Dec. 6 at the Hinckley Institute of Politics.

The Utes' loss to Colorado ended their hopes for a chance at the Pac-12 championship, but they're still headed to a bowl game, and the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, is a real possibility, according to local news reports. The Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, and the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif., are more remote possibilities.
  • Gymnastics: The Red Rocks Preview on Dec. 9 showcases the team as it begins its first season in the Pac-12.
  • Basketball: The U men's team has signed five players who will join the Utes for the 2012-13 season.
  • Ticket deals: Packages for men's and women's basketball include special offers for Pac-12 home games.
